Social Context of The Fire Next Time :: The Fire Next Time

Social Context of The Fire Next Time The Fire Next Time was published in a time of great chaos. A civil rights revolution was sweeping the country. Many of the institutions of American life were being challenged, including religion. Author James Baldwin saw power as a key to African-American success in the civil rights movement. In 1955, Rosa Parks refused to sit in the Negro section of a bus in Montgomery, Alabama. Dr. Martin Luther King transformed a racial protest into a massive resistance movement in the late 1950s. In the early 1960s, the sit-in tactic was launched in Greensboro, North Carolina, when black college students insisted on service at a local lunch counter. "Freedom Riders" were sent to the South in 1961 by the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) to test and break down segregation laws. In a few years, there would be a sexual revolution, as well as a trend toward peace and love. For the time being, however, hatred and misunderstanding were widespread. Baldwin realized the importance of these events and movements and answered them with The Fire Next Time. As Baldwin became a teenager in Harlem, he began to realize the presence of temptations such as sex and drugs. In order to fight these evils, he fled to the church. Eventually Baldwin realized that the church didn't preach love to everyone, but only to the ones who believed as they did. Despite this bad experience in the church, Baldwin never forgot the positive elements of religion. According to Kenneth Kinnamon, Baldwin realized that Christians had kept blacks down through history, but he still understood the need for religion. "However much he may revile the historical role of Christianity in the enslavement of black people, The Fire Next Time attests that [Baldwin] has never forgotten the compensatory values of his [adolescent] religious experience," he writes (3). After a meeting with Elijah Muhammad, Baldwin realized that Christianity wasn't the only flawed religion. Baldwin saw that both Islam and Christianity needed to compromise their strong beliefs for a unified black movement to have any real power. Baldwin knew the acquisition of power would have to play a key role if blacks were to achieve full civil rights. Baldwin writes, "The only thing white people have that black people need, or should want, is power--and no one holds power forever" (96). He recognizes that whites would be reluctant to relinquish the power they had over blacks.

Irish Family Structure Essay

Family is a combination of unconditional love, although the function or purpose of a family might be similar, family structure differs all over the world. As that being said there is a huge difference between the United States and Ireland. I choose to pick Ireland because it’s a small country and it’s a country we should really be looking up too. Because of Ireland’s prominent Roman Catholic roots, the family structure has not changed as drastically as it has in other countries. In other countries, divorce rates are extremely high, people get married at young ages, and families are typically small. Ireland is more traditional in the aspects when it comes to marriage, unlike the United States where divorce is extremely common. Divorce is small in Ireland and extremely rare. One in three families don’t end up having the traditional model of a marriage couple. The family structure in Ireland is really two structures, nuclear and extended, but the majority is nuclear. Nuclear families are families with two parents and extended means families that live with a relative, or a single parent. These two structures take up for the majority of Ireland. In many families they pass down traditions, or things the parent(s) would have. In fact, they each carry the rings of the average Irish cultures. The average children a married couple may have it up to one or two. Huge families are not extremely dominant in Ireland. The average families in Ireland have pretty typical modern roles. Women’s roles have changed as they began going into the work force. They are no longer expected to be a housewife and take on the nurturing motherly role. For men it is now acceptable to be sensitive and compassionate to their children as well as taking an active role within the family. Many more men are taking a larger role in raising the children and helping out with housework. Children are now seen as competent rather than innocent, acknowledging their values, roles, and abilities within society. It is safe to say that their roles are typical for a modern American family.

(Hyper Text Mark-Up Language) Is Required To Produce Basic Web Sites. - Information Technology Dissertations - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 16 Words: 4831 Downloads: 6 Date added: 2017/06/26 Category Statistics Essay Did you like this example? Critical evaluation The web authoring tool and languages used were Dreamweaver MX, HTML and Javascript. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "(Hyper Text Mark-Up Language) Is Required To Produce Basic Web Sites. Information Technology Dissertations" essay for you Create order Dreamweaver MX has a very busy user interface, which can prove a little overpowering to the less experienced web developers. Intermediate level users may find Dreamweaver MX very useful, as little knowledge of HTML (Hyper Text Mark-up Language) is required to produce basic web sites. For more dynamic web sites Dreamweaver can be a bit frustrating. The software does have a habit of producing HTML code on the fly, when it attempts second -guess what the developer was trying to achieve. The use of Javascript promotes the efficiency of the website due to the fact that it is a client-side scripting language. One of the main advantages of this is the speed of running code immediately on the client-side, negating the need to contact the web server with any queries and then having to wait for the server to perform the query and return any results. This functionality also means that server-side processing is cut down thus reducing the demand on the web server. For the purposes of this assignment, Javascript is more than capable of delivering the type of functionality necessary. The designed framework has been produced using Dreamweaver MX and basic Javascript functionality. There are elements of the current framework that can be easily built on to react to change, such as the simple, but effective table templates that I have used for this project. Also, because the code, both HTML and Javascript, have been clearly commented and correct naming conventions used, this should help if any other developers where to take on this project and further develop it at a later stage. There should have more use of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) for this development as this helps to change any common fonts and attributes for the web site. Any appearance changes that would be required at a later date can be implemented at a single point when CSS are used. With regards to the implementation of on-line registration and payment functionality there are a multitude of plug-in packages available that are easily integrated with the most basic of web pages. The vast majority of these packages fit seamlessly into any web sites design and remove the need for complex programming from the web developer. Whilst developing this website I found the use of Dreamweaver MX very frustrating for some of the reasons highlighted earlier in this evaluation. The resizing of images to fit into a particular area of a web page can be very hit-and-miss when working in the design mode of Dreamweaver. Also, the differences in the web page layout can differ dramatically between the development environment and viewing the page in a browser. Sometimes, a lot of trial and error is needed to accomplish the desired results. Being a .Net and VB6 programmer, I found the Javascript syntax radically different. Even the simplest of data manipulation can prove to be demanding, and often a little research is needed to ensure the correct syntax is implemented. One anticipated problem in developing the website further would be the necessary interaction with a web server in order to process both registration and payment details, and how this would be implemented. One of the more widely used programming languages that allow developers to access databases is PHP (PHP Hypertext Pre-processor). This way of processing user requests can often mean that the developer will use trial and error in determining what works and what doesnt. In order to safeguard competitive advantage in todays marketplace it is essential that a company has the correct procedures and processes in place to ensure that existing products/facilities are continually developed. Allied to this, any new developments need to be made available to the marketplace in as quick a time as feasibly possible. This means that any web services need to incorporate the above also. Web site design is a rapidly developing area in itself and the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) are keen to ensure the protocols and guidelines are in place to standardise use of the web. To help companies streamline their processes and provide a simple way to integrate current systems with new ones, new technologies like XML (Extensible Markup Language), SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol), WSDL (Web Services Description Language) and UDDI (Universal Description, Discovery and Integration) have been introduced. These are all part of an integrated web based service called Web Services. The move to this approach is essential for any company wishing to maintain a competitive advantage and provide a more efficient approach to business processes.
